The white church standing right next to Plaza de España, Hagåtña Cathedral (officially known as the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica), is the center of the Catholic Church in Guam and plays an important role as the island’s religious and cultural symbol. Inside the church, you’ll find beautiful, enchanting stained glass windows and the Our Lady of Camarin statue, which is said to shed tears when there is sadness and is revered as the patron saint protecting Guam. There’s a park near Spain Square. It’s called Latte Stone Park. There are stone pillars in the park. They look like mushrooms. Chamorro people made them a long time ago. The mystery is not solved. People think they used them for houses or temples.
Besides the latte stones, the park also features a statue of Angel Leon Guerrero Santos, a man who upheld Chamorro pride throughout Guam’s history of foreign rule. There are also remains of a bunker that was used by the Japanese forces during World War II, although it is now closed to the public.
