Hafa Adai!
The Guam Micronesia Island Fair (GMIF) took place over two days, Saturday and Sunday, June 7th and 8th. This cultural event celebrates the traditional customs of the islands throughout the Micronesian region in the Pacific Ocean.
Although the weather was unfortunately not ideal this year, the fair featured performances of traditional dances and demonstrations of traditional crafts from various islands.
These dancers came from Chuuk State, part of the Federated States of Micronesia. Their traditional dances differ from Chamorro dance styles, and their costumes are also completely different, which fascinated many of the local Guam residents.
Each island in the Micronesian region had its own booth at the venue, where traditional attire and long-standing customs were presented.
For example, Yap State of the Federated States of Micronesia displayed and sold beautiful floral crowns and necklaces.
At Guam’s booth, both traditional crafts and modern, stylish accessories were available for purchase—perfect for tourists looking for souvenirs from Guam.
There was also a live demonstration of coconut leaf weaving. The artisans skillfully crafted a variety of items one after another.
Despite the bad weather and a smaller turnout compared to previous years, the fair remained a valuable opportunity to experience the rich and diverse cultures of the Micronesian region. The event is scheduled to return next year, so be sure to visit if you have the chance!
